Avon & Somerset Police are asking people to be careful with the information they give over the phone.
They are currently seeing a rise in the number of scam calls, claiming to come from Amazon.
The caller tells you that a high priced item has been ordered on your account, and when you say that you didn’t order it, they tell you that they can easily cancel the order if you give certain details.
These details will then allow them access to your Amazon account, and possibly your bank account.
Amy Samotyj, Avon and Somerset Police’s Fraud Protect Officer, said:
“We’re seeing a noticeable increase in reports of criminals impersonating Amazon, and these scams are becoming increasingly convincing.
“Fraudsters are skilled at creating a sense of urgency and panic, often claiming your account has been compromised or that someone is making expensive purchases in your name. In that moment, it’s easy to act without stopping to think.”
