Leisure Rules when it comes to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

This week was Matthew Broderick’s birthday, so we decided to revisit the classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986).

We discussed the film during our BA6 and Beyond with Joe and Sylv Show on GWS Radio today (Saturday).

It was fun to see a young Matthew as Ferris alongside Alan Ruck as Cameron, Mia Sara as Sloane, and Jennifer Grey as Jeanie, Ferris’s sister.

Matthew portrays a spirited high school senior who’s had enough of boring days at home. He’s set on making the most of his day off, zooming around Chicago with his best friend, Cameron and his girlfriend, Sloane.

Ben Stein, who played the boring role of the register call teacher, was given the register to call, but nothing else he says is scripted.

He was able to do this because he was an economist who had worked as a Wall Street Journal columnist and as a speechwriter for Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.

Here’s a fun fact – during the iconic parade scene, some dancers, like the construction worker and window washer, were just grooving to the music without being part of the film.

Director John Hughes found it so funny that he decided to include them in the shots.

Rob Lowe, John Cusack, Jim Carrey, Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr., and Michael J. Fox were all considered for the role of Ferris Bueller.

Do you think they would have done a better job?
