Traffic lights at the busy Street junction on the A39 are to be replaced in early 2026 as part of a programme to upgrade ageing units.
Somerset Council have told us,
“Somerset Council is taking a significant step to enhance safety and traffic flow by replacing the ageing traffic signals at the A39 junction with Clarks Village. These current signals have been in use for over 30 years and are now due for an upgrade. Starting on January 5, 2026, and concluding by May, this project is part of a broader countywide effort to modernise our infrastructure. To ensure your commute remains as smooth as possible during this period, an intelligent temporary traffic light system will be in place. This system is designed to mirror the performance of the existing signals, helping to minimise any disruptions. The roadworks can be inconvenient, but these improvements will ultimately lead to safer and more efficient journeys for everyone,
“To ensure a smooth and safe resurfacing process, there will be evening or overnight closures. Don’t worry—these closures will be communicated well in advance so you can plan your travels accordingly. The team is undertaking major excavation work to safely remove outdated ducting and wiring, along with the traffic light heads, which will be replaced with newer, more efficient infrastructure. We understand the inconvenience this may cause, but it’s a crucial step in enhancing our roadways. In an effort to minimize future disruptions, we’re also taking this opportunity to resurface a significant stretch of road between Westway Roundabout and Street Roundabout on the A39. We’re excited to announce that a new active travel shared-use path will also be created for cyclists and pedestrians, promoting safer and more enjoyable travel for everyone. Thank you for your understanding and support during this transformative project!”
